Kind of just a thought. A rant, maybe a request.

I was chatting on the phone with a friend. She'd had her journal suspended too and she was incredibly ticked off, because they'd charged her credit card the day before it was suspended. She's not even involved in fandom, and we're pretty sure the only reason her journal was suspended, was because of the interest "rapes you in your sleep!!" which, is just an inside joke from a slumber party we'd had in high school. They won't refund her money. She's not interested in returning to livejournal. (If you can tell, we're both "early adopters" and we've been journaling together for years. She lost a lot.) And she brought up the point that if she had to deal with this "lasting scar" of losing her entire life -- livejournal should feel that too.

I'm not sure if this has been brought up yet, I've read through some back posts and I fully support and encourage the account downgrades, but what about going beyond that. Stop purchasing your livejournal when it can be taken away so easily. Stop paying for services that should actually be free. (Uploading more than six icons, how does this cost me five bucks?) These people take our money, they're funded by us, it's users. It's our choice to stop feeding into them. This opinion was a little validated by the News post. Which seemed like a very verbose way of saying "well, we can't enforce what we're trying to do, which of course is to protect the children from you monsters!!! so we'll just. maybe ask you before suspending your account." WELL. They already judged our inside joke, your interests, and your writing. I don't condone pedophilia of any sort, I really don't. And I'm insulted that I, or any one I know's journal could be branded a haven to that sort of thought. But I'd rather find a new place to journal than be judged. Just don't pay them. Ever again. Even if some of the journals are returned, they can admit their mistake all they'd like. But they forgot the point that we're customers. They serve us. Demand refunds. Call your bank, tell them the situation and oddly they'll help you out. Because If they can't pay for their servers? They'll get the point. Maybe they'll even realize how horrible it is to charge so much when they give us so little, and take away even more.

This was pointed out to me. And I'm going to be all assuming and say, it proves my point. Things change so much when there's money involved.

INSTEAD, there's a little place called RAINN "Home The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network is the nation's largest anti-sexual assault organization. RAINN operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline and carries out programs to prevent sexual assault, help victims and ensure that rapists are brought to justice." I suggest you put your money there, instead of here.

Comments appreciated. Especially if they're to tell me you're joining in on the paid account boycott ;)

Yeah, that boycott has been going on for several days. People started changing their accounts to basic accounts two days ago.

There are ever several comms going.

I have other examples -- you can comb my links if you want to

Oh, I acknowledged that, but again "what about going beyond that."

Huh? I don't understand your question. I am operating on very little sleep here.

The comm is a seven day action plan to leverage user rights with SA if they do not start putting journals back.

Point her toward [info]fandom_lawyers - they are looking for deletions like this one.

I will also bookmark it and add it to my list of crazy strikethrough07 links.

Thank you so much! I'll point her there but I think she has such a bad taste in her mouth that she wont create another journal though.

Maybe once the dust has settled and we see whether LJ is worth sticking with -- we'll all feel differently? But I wouldn't blame her. I am not sure I can stick around either.

Applause.

Hopefully they'll realize how dumb that particular suspension is and reinstate that account before noon PDT today, like Berkowitz promised. If not—well, then things are worse than I thought.

That does illustrate the wrongness of this well, though. They've gone beyond the objective standard of legality as a basis for moderation. They've given themselves the right to judge people's lives. For a journaling community—which is supposed to give people a safe space to write openly about their lives—that's just horrible.

I was going to buy a paid account soon, but I'm not going to until they restore the journals that's been affected by their asshattery.

There's surely a legal obligation to refund? Especially since they've recanted.

She can also complain to her credit card company to have the amount charged back to her card. Most of them should take such a complaint seriously. American Express in particular has always been known to side with their customers on such issues. Most likely they will do it, and then take the money from LJ/SixApart.

Oh and if she paid with PayPal, she can make a complaint against LJ there as well. If they had enough complaints, it's entirely possible they could suspend LJ's account with them until the issue was resolved.

my paid account expires next month, and i am going to let them know exactly why i'm not renewing it. if i see them really taking steps to make this right, i may reconsider. but it does seem unlikely.

gah. suspended for an inside joke. i'm so sorry your friend lost all her journal. i am so truly disguted with lj.

LiveJournal Abuse has been completely out of control for ages. I had a "permanent" account suspended for totally specious reasons several years back, so this latest bit of kneejerk, reactive idiocy on their part isn't all that surprising. Nor is their general lack of responsiveness to legitimate complaints.

LJ Abuse is a country club of unprofessional snoops. I wouldn't give Six Apart a dime to support their stupidities.
